What is a backup? Why should I care?

Backing up your data is the simple act of copying the files from the location where they are being used and updated to a separate location.  Some people place backups in separate folders while others place them in external storage systems (external hard drives, flash drives, and cloud services). 

We encourage regular backups of your Bommer data, to minimize any loss of work resulting from the original Bommer files being erased or corrupted.  Some people back up hourly or daily; many backup systems can be set up to watch a folder and backup changes as they occur.  Whatever the system you pick, make sure it is safe, durable, reliable, and (if security is a concern) secure; a backup is no good if it is damaged, lost, or inaccessible!

Backing up Bommer files

The files that need to be backed up are the same for both Mac and Windows; the only difference is where to find them on your machine.  Please reference Finding your local Bommer files for info on how to find the local Bommer files to back up.

To back up your data, find the folder referenced in the above article for your operating system, and copy this folder and all subfolders (e.g. logs, edits) to your backup folder or system.  You can do this with Fusion closed or running, though if Fusion is running it is recommended that you save your work with Bommer and stop it temporarily.  Please click here for instructions on how to stop Bommer.

Restoring your backups

1. Shut down Bommer (either by shutting down Fusion 360 or through the add-ins dialog, described here).  Do not restart Bommer or Fusion yet.
2. Copy and paste the backup folders to the same location you copied them from.  See above for reference.
3. Restart Fusion 360 and Bommer.
4. Get back to making awesome products without worrying about your BOMs.
